Innovative Muslims: Ummah Design

As part of our Innovative Muslims series, I will be profiling a company every month that is making a real difference in the community as a result of it’s products or services. Do contact me if you know of a company that should be included.

Ummah Design is best known for it’s innovative web solutions but for a while now they have been delivering workshops up and down the country to enable muslim businesses to understand and benefit from online marketing and social media. Their workshops have been greatly welcomed by the community and demand is outweighing supply.

Asalam alaykum brother Sherzod and thank you for taking the time to speak with us today. Please tell us a little bit about the services that Ummah Design offers.

We at Bespoke Internet Solutions (AKA Ummah Design) help muslim businesses to promote their product, services or brand online and increase their productivity. We do this by offering web design, SEO and online marketing services. We also deliver workshops and training for businesses to help them better understand how to leverage the web for generating more leads.

How did you come up with the workshop idea?

Having worked and being engaged with so many muslim businesses we realised that the majority of muslim businesses have not been utilising the golden opportunities available on the web. The web is evolving and yet we still resort to the old ways of advertising and promoting our businesses such as leaflet distribution or putting an advert in a newspaper.

Some businesses do have a website but they don’t know how to make it work for themselves. Many of us have heard about Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and many other social networking websites. Profit and non profit organisations alike have a massive opportunity to reach huge numbers of potential customers, donors, partners to promote their products and services, to promote their cause or try to raise funds using those networking websites.

However, due to the lack of knowledge, only a very small proportion of businesses are utilising them. Another problem within the muslim business community is the lack of socialising and networking. Muslim businesses do not get together that often and we can’t find any networking event happening around us especially here in Birmingham.

These two main reasons led us think about organising small workshops for Muslim businesses in order to increase their knowledge and help them socialise with each other. So far we have held workshops in Birmingham, London and Sheffield.

I love how you’ve spotted a gap and are making a real difference in the community, a real win win masha’Allah. What are your achievements to date with the business?

We have helped so many Muslim business’s with their online presence by building their websites and helping them to promote themselves online. We have clients not only from UK but also from USA, Canada, Lebanon, Russia and other countries. Here at Bespoke Internet Solutions charity is also very important to us. We’ve built many websites for charities and mosques free of charge to help them establish an online presence and accept donations online. We were delighted when we were told that through the website we have donated to Maidenhead mosque (www.maidenheadmosque.org) 2-3 people accepted shahadah. These type of success stories encourage us to do more charity and contribute to the community even more, Alhamdulillah.

Alhamdulillah. I’m interested to know a little about you brother Sherzod, please tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Sherzod Karimov, originally from Uzbekistan. I came to the UK in 2000 to do my master’s degree at the University of Birmingham. I founded Ummah Design back in 2005 and am trying to expand my business at the moment. I love blogging (www.ummahdesignblog.com) and am eager to network with other muslim entrepreneurs, inshallah.

Thank you ever so much for taking the time to speak with us today and I hope that you benefited as much from this as we have. I pray that Allah continues to bestow success upon you and your business endeavours, ameen.

Folks please do visit Ummah Design’s website on www.ummahdesign.com oh and check out Sherzod’s blog over at www.ummahdesignblog.com where he blogs about all kinds of interesting stuff.

Innovative Muslims: Saracens Solicitors

As part of our Innovative Muslims series, I will be profiling a company every month that is making a real difference in the community as a result of it’s products or services. Do contact me if you know of a company that should be included.

Saracens Solicitors has experienced phenomenal growth since starting up in 2005. In this short time they’ve established themselves as one of the foremost law firms providing shariah compliant services. I caught up with Fraz Butt who is one of the senior partners at Saracens Solicitors.

Asalam alaykum brother Fraz and thank you for taking the time to speak with us today. Let’s start with talking about your offering at Saracens, please tell us a little bit about the kind of services that you offer.

Walaykum salam, we offer a range of services including residential and commercial property, general civil and commercial litigation, private and corporate immigration and company/commercial legal services. Shar’iah compliant legal services is one of our growing practice areas and includes islamic wills, company/commercial work, finance, legal opinions and property re-finance, acquisitions and transfers. We have also recently opened an employment law department as a result of our continued expansion and changes in the UK labour market.

That’s quite a wide range of shariah services there on offer, masha’Allah. How did you come up with the idea to provide shariah compliant services?

We noticed that there were very few law firms which specifically addressed the needs of muslim clients who wanted to incorporate the tenets of their faith into their legal dealings, be that in a commercial or private context. We wanted to create a brand that was synonymous with quality legal services that would plug that gap in the market, as well as offering a wider range of services to the public at large. We were inspired by the models and make-up of many of the leading London city firms that have renowned and reputable backgrounds, but who tend to cater predominantly for multinational corporate clients. We wanted to re-create that type of service, and make it accessible to all types of organizations and individuals, but without the prohibitive cost.

What are your achievements to date with the business?

Saracens has gone from strength to strength since it started up in 2005. Any young business faces challenges so it is really important to keep your business plan fluid but channeled in accordance with the needs of the market. We have managed to stay on course this way and continually meet our clients’ needs.

A lot of business comes to us by word of mouth recommendations, and this is because the service we offer speaks volumes for itself. We have noticed that many of our clients have responded well to community marketing because it takes into account their specific requirements and sensitivities. For us, this means matching our profile to their needs, so we are constantly developing and improving ourselves in this manner. With our muslim clients, we believe this is because they recognise that we have an understanding of how they like to do business, taking into account their cultural and commercial practices and preferences. In addition, the Saracens team is multi-lingual, and our services are available in a range of languages, including Arabic, Urdu, Korean, Spanish, Hindi, Bengali and Gujerati.

Our immigration and property departments are two of the areas where there is high turn around of work. Our immigration department has succeeded in achieving results for their clients where other firms have simply given up. Clients have come to us with refusals to remain in the country, facing human rights violations if returned to their country of origin and a very slim chance of succeeding at appeal. But, we have seen hope where others have seen failure, and through our advice and representations these cases have resulted in clients achieving indefinite leave to remain. In some cases, we have known that these decisions will completely change some clients’ lives, and even save them from persecution and possible death. These results make all our hard work so much more rewarding and exciting. In property, we have noticed that our profile has been raised by the number of referrals and repeat business we have received from previous clients. Clients come in all shapes and sizes, and there are those who simply prefer to speak to someone who speaks their language, often quite literally, and we aim to cater for that wherever possible.

Our television appearances on a number of satellite channels demonstrate that community marketing works. We have also appeared in print in the muslim press, which has further cemented our recognition within the community. The feedback we get is tremendous and we recognize that there are people out there who have never before experienced the type of committed and diligent service that we offer our clients. We will not take a case on if we see absolutely no merit in it to the client. We want to help our clients to achieve the results they are after and we do not take the trust that they place in us lightly. These relationships are very important to us and ones we seek to build on and maintain for the long-term. Our ethos is about honesty and building trust through understanding – and we see this as a two-way street, working in partnership with our clients to get them to the place they want to be.

In terms of community spirit and presence, Saracens has been one of the main sponsors for a leading muslim educational organisation for some years now. One of the senior partners has been known to partake in charity bungee jumping, raising considerable funds for the educational needs of Muslim children. We have also run presentations and seminars on the work within emerging markets and how our clients can tap into that.

More recently and internationally, we have supported and co-hosted the Bangladeshi Chamber of Commerce annual dinner and accompanied the Department of UK Trade and Industry on a trade mission to Qatar and Bangladesh, where we have been developing our commercial presence.

We are in cyberspace, with a Facebook page, which we would encourage all Facebook members to go and join. We give a wide variety of advice there and there is the opportunity to get involved in our discussion points. If readers become a fan of our Facebook page and mention this to us when seeking advice, we will give them one free 30 minute consultation.

Our biggest achievements that make us most proud are the results that we get for our clients. A good percentage of our work is return business and this is strong evidence of our track record and ability to perform.

Those are quite the achievements masha’Allah and it’s great to see that you’re measuring your success by the level of client delight. I’m interested to know a little more about Saracens and the people behind the scenes, please tell us a little about yourself and your partners.

Fariha Butt is a junior partner and a member of the litigation team and has a (BA) Honours in Law and Spanish. After completing her degree she worked at Middlesex University in Academic Management. She then went to Australia where she developed her legal skills working for the ABN AMRO Group of companies in Sydney. She came back to London and completed her legal studies and qualified as a lawyer in 2005.

As you know my name is Fraz Butt and I am one of the senior founding partners of Saracens. I obtained an LLB Honours in law and worked in private practice and in-house for a number of years before setting up Saracens with the co-founding senior partner, Nishtar Saleem. My experience was gained predominantly in cross jurisdictional corporate law, banking and finance whilst working at leading city firms Nabarro Nathanson and Pinsent Masons. The value of certain transactions that I have worked on is mind boggling and requires precise attention to detail not to mention the ability to work under extreme pressure.

As mentioned, Nishtar Saleem is the other senior co-founding partner of Saracens. He qualified with an honours degree in Law (LLB) from University College London. He has been working in both the private and public sector of law since then and has been involved with several high profile cases including the Stephen Lawrence Enquiry and subsequent Civil Action bought by the Lawrence family. Nishtar has extensive litigation experience and deals expertly and fairly with all contentious forms of dispute in the UK and Internationally. He is known and respected particularly for his unwavering dedication to his client’s cause as well as his considerable mediation and arbitration skills.

Saracens is situated in the heart of the west end of London. We offer professional services to those who need pragmatic legal advice. We are committed to achieving the right results for all of our clients within all of our practice areas. Our client base is national as well as international with a strong drive towards the modern, paperless office. However, at Saracens we hold strong to old fashioned values such as dedication, perseverance and determination to succeed.

The philosophy here is building trust through understanding, and that resonates with all of our team members. We promote one-to-one time with clients to ensure that as their matter progresses we continue to deliver a bespoke and personalized service.

Thank you so much for sharing your time with us today Fraz, I really do appreciate it and I’m sure our readers have enjoyed learning about your experiences as much as I have. I pray that Allah continues to bestow success upon you and all at Saracens Solicitors, ameen.

Folks, please do visit their website at www.saracenssolicitors.co.uk or you can call any one of the team on 020 7725 7115 for more information or advice. Alternatively email Saracens Solicitors on info@saracenssolicitors.co.uk.

Innovative Muslims: Cre8tive Pixels

As part of our Innovative Muslims series, I will be profiling a company every month that is making a real difference in the community as a result of it’s products or services. Do contact me if you know of a company that should be included.

Cre8tive Pixels has long been at the forefront of creating beautiful designs for the benefit of muslim businesses and the community in general. Combining her keen eye and talent for accurately translating client briefs, sister Umme Ahmed has worked tirelessly to build her company from the ground up. Today, Cre8tive Pixels boasts clientele from household brands in the corporate world as well as smaller one-man-operation type businesses.

Asalam alaykum sister Umme Ahmed and thank you for taking the time to speak with us today. Could you share with us a little about the kind of services that Cre8tive Pixels offer.

Yes, walaykum salam. We specialise in brand development, corporate identity, web design, web graphics and printed media. My main tools are Adobe Illustrator CS3, Adobe Photoshop CS3, Adobe InDesign CS3, Adobe Flash CS4 Professional, HTML and CSS.

As well as having a deep understanding of brand Identity and advertising campaigns we can deliver fully comprehensive bespoke web design from sketch to fully functional and beautiful web pages.

Masha’Allah, how did you come up with the idea?

I am naturally drawn to all things creative, having dabbled in most creative hobbies/activities. That coupled with having an interest in computers, graphic design seemed to be the perfect fit for me. I started out creating a website and logo for my own startup Islamic women’s clothing website and then found myself creating logos and websites for friends, family and islamic charities/mosques. I started entering graphic contests on a national level and discovered that I wasn’t too bad having won over 70 contests for cash prizes. When I knew I was good enough, I started charging for projects and my business just took off from there. It was an ideal business for me as I am a mother of three and working from home is very important to me.

Wow over 70 contests masha’Allah! What are your other achievements to date?

Yes alhamdulillah, numerous graphic design contests on national levels, and all without any formal training in graphic design. Everything I know is self-taught. The greatest achievement for me is to successfully run a business without compromising family or my islamic principles. I can work flexibly from home and be close to my family who are my priority. I started this business five years ago and since then it has gone from strength to strength alhamdulillah.

I can understand what you mean about running your business without compromising personal values, that is quite an achievement indeed, masha’Allah. Ok so to finish off then, please tell us a little about yourself.

I studied up to university level and then worked as a teacher in the first islamic primary school in the UK for one year. I ran an online islamic womens clothing website for two years. I am a mother of three wonderful children masha’Allah. Oh and of course I operate a company called Cre8tive Pixels :-)

Lol! Of course you do how can we forget. Thank you ever so much for sharing your time with us today and I hope it wasn’t too much of an ordeal for you :-) I pray that Allah continues to bestow every success upon you, ameen.

Folks, please do check out sister Umme Ahmed’s website at www.cre8tive-pixels.com where you will find her stunning portfolio of some of the work that she has done.

You can contact Cre8tive Pixels by email on enquiries@cre8tive-pixels.com where they will be more than happy to answer any of your questions or enquiries.

Innovative Muslims: The Muslim Sticker Company

As part of our Innovative Muslims series, I will be profiling a company every month that is making a real difference in the community as a result of it’s products or services. Do contact me if you know of a company that should be included.

The Muslim Sticker Company have a fab range of products that provide a genuine benefit to developing young hearts in today’s society. I caught up with sister Farhat Amin to share with us a little about her company and the kind of things that they’ve been up to.

Asalam alaykum sister and thank you for sharing your time with us today. I’ve been a closet fan of The Muslim Sticker Company for a while now but for the benefit of folks who perhaps haven’t heard the name please tell us a little about the kinds of product you stock.

Walaykum salam, sure no problem, we sell islamic stickers, charts, badges etc. All our products are aimed at helping parents and teachers encourage kids to be good muslims and help them learn about islam in a fun and positive way. For this eid we have produced eid party cups, plates, balloons and banners.

Masha’Allah, how did you come up with the idea?

I had home schooled my kids and worked at an islamic school and I had thought at the time it would be good to reward the kids with islamic stickers and certificates. There was nothing available so I would spend alot of time making my own charts and designing certificates, it was very time consuming.

So once I stopped work I spoke to my husband about the idea. We started off small to test the market out. My husband took care of the design, printing and online side of the business and I focused on the content of the products.

We began with teachers stickers and eid stickers and our juz amma tree which were all very popular and we now have over 50 products in our range.

Wow over 50 products, masha’Allah! What are your other achievements to date?

Our products are sold in US, Japan, France, South Africa, Australia and Denmark. We have translated products into French and Arabic. Over 20 shops in the UK sell our products. In the UK a large number of schools and madrasas use our products to reward kids which makes me really happy. I personally feel a sense of achievement when I speak to parents and teachers and they tell me how much their kids or students like the stickers and how they are helping to improve the children’s behaviour.

Those are pretty amazing achievements masha’Allah and I can understand what you mean to actually see the product you’ve created making a real difference.  I’m interested to know a little bit about yourself.

I am a mum, I have three kids who I have tried and tested all my products on. I am also a full time secondary English teacher. I worked in islamic schools for a few years and also hold islamic circles for teenagers in my local area.

You have quite the schedule and I’m amazed at how you’ve managed to fit everything in. Thank you again for sharing your valuable time with us and I pray that Allah continues to bestow every success on you and The Muslim Sticker Company, ameen.

Folks, please do check out sister Farhat’s website over at www.muslimstickers.com where you can find and securely buy from a wide range of innovative products.

You can contact The Muslim Sticker Company by telephoning (depending on where you are in the world) on; 020 3286 4155 (UK), 206 866 5786 (USA), 02 8005 7860 (Australia). You can email them using info@muslimstickers.com. You can Skype them using muslimstickers or IM them on Yahoo messenger using muslimstickers.

I’m Inspired By Muhammad (PBUH), Are You?

Driving into the office this morning I heard a piece on the radio as a result of which I had a why-didn’t-I-think-of-that moment.  Here is a link to the piece where Radio 4′s Sarah Montague interviews Remona Aly on the Today programme:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_8725000/8725419.stm

In a nutshell the campain is entitled Inspired by Muhammad and is basically a showcase of everyday Britons demonstrating how the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has inspired them to contribute to society in a positive way.  Created by an organisation called the Explore Islam Foundation, the campaign aims to create a better understanding of Islam and Muslims.  And judging by the YouGov poll that they’ve had commissioned, there certainly is a need for such efforts that show Islam and Muslims in a positive light.

Please do support them by visiting the links in this post and also tell your family and friends about the campaign.  Oh and mention it to your colleagues at work too, or uni or wherever you come into contact with non-muslims as it is really these people that the campaign is trying to reach out to.

I think the idea behind the campaign is fab and the team behind it have done a great job masha’Allah.  I wish them every success and pray that this is the first of many such campaigns to come.

Muslim Organisations: Stop Spamming Already!

Muslim spam is on the increase. At least that’s what it feels like to me. I seem to be inundated with emails from well intended muslim companies advertising their various products and services. And then there are the dozens of newsletters and event notices from dawah organisations. A quick straw poll of family and friends shows that there are many others who are receiving such emails also. Maybe I’m being a little harsh but if I am receiving emails from a company or organisation that I have not shared my email address with then I don’t see how this is anything other than spam, albeit muslim spam.

Muslim companies and organisations must improve their online communication practices and not fall into spamming. And of course I include Tijara Pages in this too.

Firstly, to those muslims that sell or share my (and by extension everyone’s) email address: please stop. Just because I emailed you at some point doesn’t give you permission to pass my email address on to somebody else, even if they are a reputable organisation. In fact, if they are a reputable organisation who are involved in good works in the community then quite frankly they should not be building their networks using questionable methods such as this.

Secondly, to those muslim organisations, if you are going to buy or acquire my email address at least have the courtesy to ask me if I want to join your mailing list. Send me an introductory but brief email describing what your future mailings will contain, tell me exactly what you will and won’t do with my email address and ask me for my permission.

Give me the option to subscribe to your mailing list. Don’t assume that I want to join and definitely definitely don’t sign me up and then just include an unsubscribe link.

If you still insist on forcefully signing me up to your mailing list, if I really don’t have any say in the matter then at the very least, please honour any request I make to unsubscribe from your list. It is disingenuous of you to include an unsubscribe link in your email and then when I click on it to remove myself you still continue to send me email after email.

And lastly, when I have unsubscribed and you have stopped sending me emails, please don’t share my email address with anyone else. Not without asking my permission and irrelevant of how deserving you think their cause is.

An email address is no different to somebody’s telephone number and should be treated as such. Signing people up to your email lists without their permission and imposing your messages on them is analogous to harvesting people’s telephone numbers and cold calling them. And you wouldn’t do that now would you? No I didn’t think so.

Bag a Bargain… Muslim Discount Schemes

We all love a bargain and so I thought I’d put together a quick list of the different kinds of discount schemes that are available today that generally target the muslim community.

Have a browse through the list below and let me know in the comments if there are any discount schemes that I may have missed. Oh and do sign up to as many of the schemes as you can to show your support for the businesses involved. And to bag a great bargain of course :) .

MD Privelege Card

This scheme is managed by Muslim Directory who are the pioneers in this market masha’Allah.

They seem to have quite a few businesses signed up and offering discounts to privelege card holders. You can find out exactly what deals are on offer by checking their website.

You become a privelege card holder by getting in touch with them and providing some contact details. The card costs £15 for one year. Once the year is up you can apply for a new card by paying £15 again. Oh and if you lose your card there is a discretionary fee of £5 to replace it.

Businesses can sign up to offer discounts by contacting MD directly. I don’t think there is a charge to join up per say but you do have to be a paid advertiser in their directory.

Dawah Card

Next up is the dawah card by Islam Channel. This works in the same way as the privelege card. They also have a lot of businesses signed up offering discounts to dawah card holders, details of which you can get on their website. They use this scheme to raise funds for their dawah project.

To become a dawah card holder you contact IC directly giving them some contact details. There isn’t a set charge to obtain the card but they do ask for a donation to their dawah project of a minimum of £1 per month. Once you have the card you can immediately start to redeem any of the discounts on offer.

Businesses sign up to the scheme by contacting IC directly. There is a charge of £250 per year and you have to offer some kind of a discount. However the added bonus is that you get your logo displayed on their TV advert that advertises the dawah card. You also get an entry in their business brochure that gets printed and distributed every year.

Ummah Vouchers

The first muslim voucher website, Ummah Vouchers is basically a directory of discounts being offered by muslim businesses. They are relatively new to the market and so don’t have as many businesses signed up with them compared to the schemes mentioned earlier. However their’s is certainly an interesting take on the discount scheme as they’ve eliminated the need to have to carry around a physical card.

As a consumer, if you want to take advantage of any of the discounts on their website you simply print off the relevant voucher to take to the merchant. They also have discounts for online businesses where you simply copy the discount code and paste it in to the merchant’s website. There is no charge to get access to their discounts but you do need to register on their website to be able to print vouchers.

Businesses can sign up by registering on their website also. Once registered they will contact you for more details on the kinds of dicounts that you want to offer. There does seem to be a charge for businesses to join the scheme but there is no published pricing policy available to confirm the exact details.

KIM Card

Last but by no means least there is our very own KIM (Keep It Muslim) Card. The youngest out of all the schemes mentioned, KIM has quickly grown to become the largest in terms of the discounts being offered. Details of all discounts on offer are available on the KIM website.

You can take advantage of any of the KIM discounts by becoming a KIM member. You don’t need to fill out any forms to become a KIM member, simply text I SUPPORT KIM to 07786 20 10 76. You instantly receive a unique reference that you can then use to redeem discounts, which means that there is no plastic card to carry around in your pocket. There is no charge to join and even the text message that you send is effectively free as most mobile phones come with text bundles as standard nowadays. Oh and if you lose your reference number simply text again and you will receive a new reference – again no charge.

As a business you can join by simply submitting your details online. There is no charge to join KIM and you get your business details displayed on both the KIM and Tijara Pages website.

The KIM Discount Scheme

I wanted to inform you of a fantastic new project, the Keep It Muslim (KIM) Discount Scheme.  As the name suggests the KIM discount scheme allows for you the consumer to get some great discounts from trusted retailers and traders.  All you have to do is become a KIM member and you will instantly have access to a range of deals and discounts.  With over 170 retailers already signed up and offering discounts that’s a whole lot of deals that you could be taking advantage of.

How do you become a member?  It couldn’t be simpler.  Text I SUPPORT KIM to 07786 20 10 76 and you will instantly receive your unique reference number. It is this reference number that you will use to redeem your discount with a participating retailer.

Why a text message and not a plastic card?  Simply because a text message means one less card to carry in your wallet or purse and we all do our bit for the environment in the process. Oh and if you accidentally delete your text message just text the number again and you’ll receive a new reference instantly.

Well what are you waiting for?  Go on and text 07786 20 10 76 now and start saving money on thousands of muslim products.

Still not convinced? Go here to get more information and a list of retailers who are offering discounts as part of the KIM scheme.

Are you a trader interested in joining the KIM discount scheme?  Go here for more information and sign up.
